sameday courier deliveries to london could be delayed when tower bridge closes for repair work
Tower Bridge London is set to close for 3 months from October this year to allow for maintenance work to be carried out, City of London Corporation has said.
Approximately 21,000 vehicles use the bridge on a daily basis but it has gone "without significant engineering works" for 35 years. TfL said it would work with partners to minimise the impact on traffic whilst the bridge undergoes maintenance, including the replacement of its Victorian timber decking which was last refurbished in the 1970'sdecking and the removal of rust. Unfortunately this is almost ceratin to lead to delays to some Sameday courier deliveries into central London with Black cab drivers calculating that even the shortest river crossing could take up to half an hour longer at certain times. Other work will include waterproofing the archways in the approach to the bridge, which were last worked on when they were built at the end of the 19th century and resurfacing the road and walkways.
AA president Edmund King claims frustrated drivers who have been affected by congestion during the introduction and construction of new cycle lanes in recent years will now suffer more misery. "Just when traffic will have got back to normal following the disruption caused by the Cycle Superhighways construction, London drivers will be hit by another dead end," he said.
Whilst some delays will be inevitable Rapid Despatch control staff will advise wherever possible of any delays to sameday courier deliveries into and where alternative routes can be used. Please contact your local office if you would like further information on how this may affect you.
